🍀5 Fun St. Patrick’s Day Activities for Toddler and Preschoolers🍀

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day while supporting your child’s learning and development!

These 5 playful activities are designed to spark curiosity, build key skills, and create joyful moments with your little ones.

Each activity is differentiated for toddlers and preschoolers so you can easily adapt it to your child’s age and stage. These are also perfect if you have more than one child under 5 and need only one set-up!

Activity 1: Rainbow Sorting 🌈

Skills: Color recognition, fine motor, language

  • Toddlers:
    • Use colored pom-poms, blocks, or paper circles.
    • Invite your toddler to place each color in matching bowls or trays.
    • Talk about the colors as you sort together.
    • Draw an outline of a rainbow on a piece of card or paper, Put glue on a piece of paper for your toddler and let them express themselves and create their own rainbow design.
  • Preschoolers:
    • Make a rainbow using colored items (buttons, paper, beads).
    • Challenge preschoolers to sort by color or create patterns.
    • Encourage them to name the colors in each “rainbow band.”
  • Added bonus: Sing “The Rainbow Song” together and learn the colors.

Activity 2: Shamrock Stamping 🍀

Skills: Creativity, hand-eye coordination, early art exploration

  • Toddlers:
    • Cut shamrock shapes from sponge or potatoes.
    • Dip in paint and stamp onto paper. Learn how to make your own home made paint here.
    • Let your toddler explore pressing and making prints independently.
  • Preschoolers:
    • Trace shamrock outlines and decorate with stamps, stickers, or paint dots.
    • Encourage counting stamper prints: “How many shamrocks did you make?”
    • Discuss patterns and symmetry for extra learning.

Activity 3: Leprechaun Treasure Hunt 🪙

Skills: Gross motor, problem solving, observation

  • Toddlers:
    • Hide colored coins (draw them on card and cut them out) or small toys around a safe space.
    • Encourage your toddler to find them, naming the colors or shapes as they go.
  • Preschoolers:
    • Give a simple treasure map or picture clues.
    • Include sorting the treasures by color or size once found.
    • Ask questions: “Which coin is the biggest? Which toy is green?”

Activity 4: Lucky Number Hop 🔢

Skills: Counting, gross motor, number recognition

  • Toddlers:
    • Go outside and draw shamrock shapes (large and small) on the floor using chalk.
    • Encourage your toddler to step on them (join in – it’s fun!) e.g. can you step on 2 shamrocks? Can you jump on a BIG shamrock?
  • Preschoolers:
    • Write numbers 1–10 on shamrocks.
    • Ask your child to hop to the correct number as you call it out.
    • Take it in turns, or turn it into a race! Take turns calling out a number and see who can run to it the fastest.

Activity 5: Gold Coin Sensory Bin 🪙

Skills: Sensory exploration, fine motor, early math vocabulary

  • Toddlers:
    • Fill a bin with shredded paper, fabric, or rice and add plastic or cardboard gold coins.
    • Encourage toddlers to scoop, pour, and explore textures.
  • Preschoolers:
    • Hide coins with numbers or letters on them.
    • Invite preschoolers to find and sort coins by number or letter.
    • Ask questions: “Can you make groups of 5 coins?” or “Which coin has the letter A?”
